DUI/DUID/DWAI: Man faces charges after car goes through building

A conviction for driving under the influence can have a long-term impact on a person's life. An individual accused of DUI/DUID/DWAI might end up spending time behind bars if he or she is convicted, and claiming a job may become more difficult with a tarnished criminal record. One man in Colorado currently faces charges of DUI following a single-vehicle accident.

The accident occurred at about 11 a.m. on a Saturday. Police said a car entered the front part of a business and ended up inside the building. This caused damage to the property and its contents totaling about $5,000.

The car then reportedly backed out of the building and left the accident scene. Several minutes later, the car came back to the scene. Police determined that the man driving the car was under the influence of alcohol when the accident happened. The man, 53, was charged with DUI as well as additional traffic offenses. No one suffered injuries in the wreck.

Prosecutors in Colorado have the responsibility of proving DUI/DUID/DWAI charges beyond a reasonable doubt; if this is not accomplished, no conviction can be handed down. This standard is intentionally set high in order to prevent innocent people from becoming convicted of crimes. This man's defense counsel will concentrate on fighting for a result that satisfies his best interests. In some situations, this might mean a criminal trial, while in other situations, a plea deal may be struck in exchange for sentencing considerations that the client considers to be more acceptable to him or her.
