Alleged DUI accident involves Colorado police cruisers

A vehicle operated by a 32-year-old man suspected of driving drunk apparently collided with a police car recently. The alleged DUI accident occurred early in the morning on a Saturday in the northeastern part of Colorado Springs. The man who reportedly caused the accident was arrested and now faces criminal charges.

The accident occurred at a little past 1:50 a.m. At that time, police in Colorado Springs were in the process of investigating another collision at the intersection of two streets. The emergency lights for two cruisers were activated in order to prevent oncoming traffic from going into the area.

When the vehicle collided with the police cruiser, the unoccupied police car rolled into another empty one nearby. Both motor vehicles were significantly damaged as a result of the incident. The man was arrested after undergoing a medical evaluation. Nobody suffered injuries in the accident.

Facing a DUI charge can be frightening, as having a DUI on a criminal record can hamper future opportunities, including employment prospects. Those who are accused of driving under the influence, however, have the right to fight any criminal charges at trial, forcing prosecutors to prove the formal accusations beyond a reasonable doubt before any conviction can be handed down against them. As an alternative, many defendants -- alongside their legal counsel -- can seek to negotiate plea deals with the prosecution in exchange for reduced charges and/or favorable sentencing considerations. Either way, the criminal defense will strive to ensure that the client's legal rights are upheld at all stages of the criminal proceeding while focused on achieving an optimal result.
