Over 200 arrested for DUI during Super Bowl Weekend

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, more than 200 people were arrested for drunk driving during Super Bowl Weekend. The DUI arrests of the 273 motorists took place as part of the state's campaign known as The Heat is On. This campaign targets impaired motorists at various points of the year when incidences of driving under the influence spike.

A total of 28 people in Colorado Springs were taken into custody during the early February campaign. In addition, 27 people were arrested in Denver. The highest arrest count was in Aurora, where 29 DUI arrests were made.

According to authorities, about 33 percent of traffic fatalities in Colorado involved a driver who was impaired. Police said that The Heat is On campaign exists to help to curb the number of traffic deaths in the state. The total number of DUI arrests made during this year's Super Bowl Weekend campaign is lower than last year's 325 arrests. The next enforcement period is slated to be during the St. Patrick's Day holiday in March.

Being pulled over for DUI in Colorado can naturally be frightening, but being charged with drunk driving does not automatically mean one is guilty. Prosecutors have to prove a defendant's guilt at trial beyond a reasonable doubt before a conviction can happen. However, rather than going to trial, the defendant may decide to seek to negotiate a plea deal with prosecutors, as a plea agreement may lead to a lighter charge and/or a more lenient sentence than what would be handed down following a guilty verdict at trial.
