DUI enforcement period to run through May 15

Colorado police are cracking down on drunk driving this spring. For this reason, local police departments are participating in a DUI campaign known as The Heat Is On. The enforcement started the first full week of April and should run to May 15.

More than 100 law enforcement agencies throughout the state will take part in the initiative. The Colorado Department of Transportation and the Colorado State Patrol are also playing an important role in the current enforcement period. In 2016, more than 1,500 people were taken into custody for DUI during a similar five-week enforcement period.

In April and May of last year, 94 deaths occurred on the state's roads due to traffic accidents. Of this number, a whopping 40 percent involved impaired drivers. Because spring is also baseball season, the department of transportation is displaying posters at Coors Field to encourage fans to drink alcohol responsibly.

Being pulled over and arrested for driving under the influence can understandably be frightening, especially if the accused individual has never faced criminal charges before. Unfortunately, the problems that a criminal conviction can cause may last years, keeping a Colorado resident from being able to get a job in a particular field or even from renting a car. Nevertheless, a DUI conviction cannot be secured until and unless prosecutors prove each element of the charge in court and beyond a reasonable doubt, a burden that can be difficult to meet. Thus, a careful examination of the evidence that prosecutors intend to present in an effort to secure a conviction is typically a major area of concentration for a criminal defense team.
